Applied AI & Workflow Automation Engineer
Full-time | Hybrid | Greater Boston Area
Role Description
ACHIEVE ENVIRONMENTAL is seeking a full-time Applied AI & Workflow Automation Engineer for a hybrid position in the Greater Boston area.
This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys turning complex, document-heavy processes into reliable software. The engineer will design, build, and maintain the automations, integrations, and applied AI tools that support our environmental permitting, compliance, and reporting work, both for our own consultants and for clients through our Digital Solutions practice, including Æ intelligence, our applied-AI environmental compliance platform.
A primary responsibility will be building systems that collect, validate, organize, and analyze environmental data from many sources, including data acquisition system (DAS) exports, laboratory analytical reports, stack test results, stormwater and wastewater monitoring reports, permits, and regulatory documents. This work will include developing data pipelines and document-processing workflows, connecting business applications through APIs, and applying large language models to tasks such as information extraction, classification, search, summarization, and drafting, with documentation, quality control, and human review built into each workflow.
The engineer will work closely with our environmental engineers and scientists to understand how permitting and compliance work is performed, identify where automation adds the most value, and deliver tools that are accurate, auditable, secure, and easy to use. These tools support qualified environmental professionals rather than replace their judgment, so accuracy, traceability, and appropriate human oversight are central to the role.
After deployment, the engineer will monitor, tune, and update systems as permits change, facilities expand, and client needs evolve. The role may also include supporting client implementations, preparing technical documentation and training materials, and contributing to scoping and proposals for digital solutions projects.
Key Responsibilities
-
Design, build, and maintain workflow automations and system integrations that streamline environmental permitting, compliance, and reporting processes.
-
Develop data pipelines that ingest, validate, and organize data from DAS exports, spreadsheets, laboratory reports, stack tests, monitoring reports, and other sources.
-
Build applied AI tools that use large language models for document extraction, classification, summarization, search, and drafting.
-
Develop retrieval-augmented search and question-answering tools over permits, regulations, agency guidance, and internal knowledge bases.
-
Connect business applications, document management systems, and cloud services through APIs and webhooks.
-
Build dashboards, reports, and internal tools that help consultants and clients track compliance obligations, deadlines, and emissions data.
-
Establish testing, evaluation, and quality control practices for automations and AI outputs, including accuracy checks, logging, and audit trails.
-
Implement security, access control, and data-handling practices that protect confidential client information.
-
Monitor, troubleshoot, and continuously improve deployed systems, and update them as permits, regulations, and operations change.
-
Document systems clearly and train consultants and client personnel to use them effectively.
-
Collaborate with environmental engineers and scientists to translate regulatory and operational requirements into technical specifications.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
-
At least three years of professional experience building workflow automations, system integrations, data pipelines, or AI-enabled applications.
-
Strong programming skills in Python and working knowledge of SQL and data modeling.
-
Hands-on experience integrating REST APIs, webhooks, and cloud-based services.
-
Practical experience applying large language models to business workflows, including prompt design, structured outputs, retrieval, and evaluation.
-
Experience extracting and structuring data from documents such as PDFs, spreadsheets, and scanned reports.
-
Familiarity with version control, automated testing, and deployment practices.
-
Meticulous attention to detail, data quality, and documentation.
-
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work directly with non-technical subject matter experts and clients.
-
Ability to work effectively in a hybrid arrangement in the Greater Boston area and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with environmental, health and safety (EHS), engineering, or other regulated-industry data.
-
Familiarity with environmental permitting, monitoring, and reporting programs, such as Title V, NPDES stormwater, RCRA, or greenhouse gas reporting.
-
Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript, low-code automation platforms, and Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 scripting and integrations.
-
Experience building internal tools, dashboards, or client portals.
-
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a pragmatic builder who enjoys learning how experts work and turning that knowledge into dependable tools. This individual takes ownership of the accuracy, reliability, and security of their systems and can independently carry projects from problem definition through deployment and ongoing support.
They understand both the potential and the limitations of AI, design for verification and human oversight, and can explain technical tradeoffs clearly to engineers, scientists, and clients.
Minimum Requirements
-
3+ years of experience building workflow automations, integrations, or AI applications
-
Bachelor's Degree
